Smart Plugs: What They Actually Do and What They Do Not

A smart plug is a socket you can switch remotely or on a schedule. That is the whole feature set, and within it there is more usefulness than people expect and a few hard limits.

What works well on a smart plug

Anything that has a mechanical on/off switch and resumes when power returns. Lamps, fans, Christmas lights, a coffee machine with a physical switch, a heated towel rail, an electric blanket, a slow cooker.

The high-value uses are usually the boring ones: a lamp on a schedule while you are away, a fan that turns off two hours after bedtime, a towel rail that runs for an hour in the morning rather than all day.

What does not work

Anything with a soft-touch electronic power button that stays off when power is restored. Cutting and restoring power to a modern television or a games console does not turn it on; it turns it off and leaves it off.

Anything that must not lose power unexpectedly — a desktop computer, a fridge, a freezer, medical equipment.

Anything you cannot see. A heater on a remote schedule is a genuine fire risk if something has been left on or against it. This is the one category where we would say do not.

The compatibility question to ask

Ask which voice assistants the manufacturer supports, and whether the plug needs the manufacturer’s own app or works with a standard.

Our listings name the assistants the manufacturer states. We do not claim universal compatibility, because a plug that needs a specific app is a plug that stops working when that app is discontinued.

Where a plug supports an open standard rather than only a proprietary app, that is worth paying a little more for.

Hubs, and whether you need one

Wi-Fi plugs connect directly to your router and need no hub. That is their main advantage and the reason they are the cheapest entry point.

Zigbee and Z-Wave plugs need a hub, use less bandwidth and are more reliable in a house with many devices. If you plan to install twenty devices, that architecture is better. For three, Wi-Fi is fine.

Note that most Wi-Fi plugs are 2.4 GHz only and will not see a 5 GHz network. This is the single most common setup failure.

Load ratings matter

Every plug has a maximum rated load, typically 10 to 15 amps. A lamp is trivial; a heater or a kettle is not.

Check the appliance’s rating against the plug’s before connecting anything that heats. Do not daisy-chain smart plugs or use them with extension leads carrying high loads.

Privacy and longevity

A smart plug reports to a manufacturer’s cloud service. If that service closes, plugs that depend on it become ordinary sockets — this has happened to several brands.

Prefer devices with local control or open-standard support if longevity matters to you.
